Training of the Horse

Michael Richardson uses a combination of traditional and natural horsemanship methods in his training of the horse. At all times, the horse's age, level of comfort, and confidence are factored into what he or she is being asked to do during training.

For the first two to three years, groundwork is the focus of a young horse's training. Confidence building is emphasized and possible future careers for each particular horse are considered. For example, eventing prospects are presented with a variety of challenges that build trust between horse and handler that will last into under saddle training and eventually aid in the ability of that horse when he is presented with obstacles on a cross country course or during stadium jumping. Again, groundwork is used to lay the foundation between horse and handler and everything possible is done to maintain a trusting relationship and make the horse feel secure within his ability and that of his handler.

As the horse proceeds to under saddle training, every effort is made to maintain the same level of trust and partnership created during groundwork. Most horses that have been in Michael's program tend to accept a rider with minimal stress because the groundwork foundation is strong enough to maintain trust. Although each horse works through the program at his or her individual pace, steady progress is emphasized and the horse's future career is regularly considered during drills and exercises.

When the horse is ready to progress into competition, the riding program gradually increases in intensity and focus. The concentration now is on refinement, lightness, balance, and responsiveness, yet confidence and trust are never sacrificed. Each horse is encouraged to perform to the level of his ability but never pushed beyond.

At all phases of training, Michael looks at problems not as issues to be conquered, but as opportunities to improve the horse's skills and learning abilities.

Training of the Rider

Riders are an essential part of their horse's success. When working with riders, Michael focuses on building understanding of the horse. He encourages riders to learn how to read their horse's behavior—no matter how subtle—and adjust accordingly. Balance, lightness, refinement of the aids, and communication are emphasized to the rider. Riders are also encouraged to build trust between themselves and the horse at all times through consistency and fairness.

When a rider first comes to work with Michael, he will evaluate their current level of ability, consider what they want to become, and help them develop a plan to achieve their goals. Riders are generally broken into four levels: D thru A. Level D represents the beginner or introductory level of Michael's program. Level C students concentrate on improving the quality of their horses' gaits, transitions, and building a connected relationship. Level B students work on lateral movements, refining their position, building suppleness, and increasing lightness in their aids and the horse. Level A students work on increasing lightness, refining responsiveness, and absolute connection.

Riders can choose to study with Michael at his facility in Hico, Texas, at clinics given around the country, or through his new on-going video series.

The horse and rider should ultimately form a partnership where they support each other.

A confident foundation begins with groundwork.

Understanding the horse as a horse is a must.

The horse's mind and body and the effects that the rider's mind and body have on the horse must be considered to form a harmonious relationship.

The rider's balance, position, and use of the aids all affect the quality of gait in the horse under saddle.

Advanced work comes with time and practice.
